Learning Outcomes at SLCC
Students communicate effectively. This includes developing critical literacies—reading, writing, speaking, listening, visual understanding—that they can apply in various contexts; Organizing and presenting ideas and information visually, orally, and in writing according to standard usage; Understanding and using the elements of effective communication in interpersonal, small group, and mass settings.
In English 2010 class we worked in a group to create a magazine on mental illnesses. Our main goal of the project was to use visuals to explain our thoughts and feelings on metal illnesses. Mental illnesses is a very touchy subject for some people, we felt as a group that pictures were a better resource to get our thoughts across to the reader instead of trying to use words. From this project I was able to learn how to express most of my thoughts and feelings into graphics and pictures, this wasn't easy for me.
Students develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study. This includes approaching practical problems by choosing and applying appropriate mathematical techniques; Using information represented as data, graphs, tables, and schematics in a variety of disciplines; Applying mathematical theory, concepts, and methods of inquiry appropriate to program-specific problems.
In Math 1050 I did a Mortgage Project at the end of the year to use the equations and skill sets I learned throughout the semester. I examined what a home loan would look like if I were buying a house. I used calculations to find what I would be paying for the down payment and the monthly payments after that. I also calculated whether I would lose or gain money if I sold the house after living in it for 10 years. This project was very interesting and helped me relate the things I learned during the semester to a real life situation. It helped me realize that you really do use the equations you learn in math for specific problems in life, we wouldn't be able to do many things in life without math.
Students think critically and creatively. This includes reasoning effectively from available evidence; Demonstrating effective problem solving; Engaging in creative thinking, expression, and application; Engaging in reflective thinking and expression; Demonstrating higher-order skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation; Making connections across disciplines; Applying scientific methods to the inquiry process.
At the beginning of the semester I made a goal to be more creative and think outside the box for my assignments in English 2010. Each week I wrote a notebook prompt for the class. On these I really tried to broaden my thinking and write about something that I would not normally write about. I feel like this really helped my writing. I got more comfortable in my writing styles because I wasn't just writing about the same things over and over again. This also helped expand my knowledge because I was able to learn and research things I wouldn't normally be interested in. Researching on a topic that wouldn't normally catch my interest but writing a short notebook prompt on it is even harder. I'm glad I pushed myself to try something new because I was able to learn a lot of new things that I most likely would have never learned if I would have just stayed in my comfort zone of certain topics.
Students develop civic literacy and the capacity to be community-engaged learners who act in mutually beneficial ways with community partners. This includes producing learning artifacts indicating understanding of the political, historical, economic or sociological aspects of social change and continuity; thinking critically about—and weighing the evidence surrounding—issues important to local, national, or global communities; participating in a broad range of community-engagement and/or service-learning courses for community building and an enhanced academic experience.
Political Science 1100 was a challenging class for me. Politics never really have been my thing and they are hard for me to understand a lot of the time. At the end of the semester I choose the topic of gun laws for myfinal paper. For this paper I really had to take into account evidence of what gun laws effect. I had to think outside of the box to make sure I was covering every aspect of the situation and not just focusing on my opinion but was able to pull in what others might think as well. I had to put myself in their shoes and try and see their side of things. One thing that really helped me reflect on my thinking as creating and pros and cons table to order my thoughts. This paper really tested my writing and order skills, I had a hard time organizing my thoughts. I'm glad this paper was able to help me get some experience on organizing thoughts so I can use that skill on other papers in the future.
Students develop the knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and constructive manner. This includes engaging with a diverse set of others to produce professional work; Interacting competently across cultures; Understanding and appreciating human differences; Understanding and acting on standards of professionalism and civility, including the SLCC Student Code of Conduct.
I took English 2010online. There were many group projects throughout the semester making not being in a classroom with my classmates very challenging. I had to learn how to communicate with my group partners in a professional manner but also in a way to build a trusting relationship. It was so fun to work in groups because you are able to hear everyone's different ideas that you might not have thought of. It is also important while working in a group that not everybody has the same opinion or thoughts on certain subjects. The big group project we focused on was our Magazine. This was extremely difficult for our group because the topic we chose, Mental Illness, has a lot of different perspectives. It was important as a group that we discussed everybody's ideas and took them all into account. We also really tried to tie in all the different outlooks on the subject into our magazine. This project really helped me understand others and work better with all different types of students.
Students develop computer and information literacy. This includes using contemporary computer hardware and software to effectively complete college-level assignments; Gathering and analyzing information using technology, library resources, and other modalities; Understanding and acting upon ethical and security principles with respect to computer technology and to information acquisition and distribution; Distinguishing between credible and non-credible sources of information, and using the former in their work in an appropriately documented fashion.
Finding credible sources for my Criminal Justice 1010 paper on whether or not police officers should exercise discretion was very difficult. A lot of the information I found was based on opinions instead of facts. Learning how to tell when a source is credible or not is something I had to work on. Technology can be really helpful at times but sometimes people believe everything they see on the internet. It is very important to remember to use technology for the correct thins and be able to tell when something is true, fake or opinionated. This is something I really had to work on during this project and I'm glad I was able to practice finding out whether a source was credible or not, this will be really helpful in my future projects.
Students develop the attitudes and skills for lifelong wellness. This includes understanding the importance of physical activity and its connection to lifelong wellness; Learning how participation in a fitness, sport or leisure activity results in daily benefits including stress reduction, endorphin release, and a sense of well-being.
In Health and Fitness 1096 I was able to focus on my physical and mental wellness a little bit more than I usually do. All of our assignments were focused on either growing physically or mentally. During the semester we were asked to keep a log of our exercises and try to better our routines every week. I took this really seriously and really wanted to get back in the habit of being physically active and going to the gym. I also focused on stress during the span of the semester. I tried different techniques and coping mechanisms to try and take a better control of my stress, and I found some really useful tools that worked for me. During this class I realized that even though exercising and staying physically active isn't always fun there are so many benefits that come along with it. It makes me more motivated to go to the gym or get outside and do something active now that I have realized and experienced these benefits.
