Course Reflections
1. What connections have you had from what you've studied in Fitness for Life with what you've learned from other courses you have taken at SLCC or have learned before taking this class? Make specific references to your work in this class and in other courses. How did what you learned in other courses enhance what you learned in Fitness for Life, and vice versa?
It was really hard for me at first to realize the connections between a fitness class and any other normal student's schedule of general credits like Math and English. Then it hit me, it doesn't have to be a physical similarity or connection it could be all the work that is put into each class. Each class has it's very own homework and assignments that you have to do but they all have something in common, they get your brain thinking and working. I never thought of a fitness class making your brain work but this semester this class has made me realize that fitness classes aren't all about working out and being physically active, it is also about the mind set and motivation that you set for yourself. This class has really taught me how to train my brain not only during a workout but before and after the workout as well. Mental and emotional strength is just as important as physical strength. The mentality that I learned during this class really helped me with my other classes this semester. By being more active and fulfilling the exercise requirements for this class my body has had more energy to put towards my other classes. Pushing myself to get enough sleep has not only helped my body have more energy it has helped my grades this semester in my other classes stay up and has given me the motivation that I need to continue throughout the whole semester strong without losing that motivation to finish better than I started.
2. Reflect on what you thought about Fitness and Lifelong Wellness before you took this course and how you think about it now that you have completed the course. Have any of your assumptions or understandings changed? Why? What assignments/activities/readings were influential in this process? How will you approach what influenced you differently in the future?
I have always known that if you live a life of fitness you will be healthier longer, have less change of disease and live longer but this semester Fitness and Lifelong Wellness has changed my outlook on life. Yes you can say you're going to exercise, go to the gym and eat a healthy diet to live a longer happier life but how many of us actually do that? We always put it off till tomorrow, we tell ourselves we will start good habits another day, next week or even next year. Now is the time to start, now is the only time to start because most likely you aren't going to start tomorrow, next week or next year. This class this semester made me realize that now is the only time to create good habits, or they will never happen. I really put my all into this class, and did my best to get the results I hoped for from the start of the semester. Before I always would tell myself that I'm too busy for the gym, I don't ever have any time to go but after this semester I have learned that there is always time for the gym if you make time for it. You have to make time for it or else you will never go. I have learned to fight myself so much to have the motivation to get to the gym but now I realize the importance and I truly see how better it makes you feel. After this semester it is no longer a fight to get myself to go to the gym it is more like fighting myself to leave the gym because I have learned to love it so much. I understand now that the gym should be a priority and if you make it one then you will always have time for it. Setting a certain time everyday for the gym is the way I found easiest to get to the gym, I know where I'm supposed to be at that time and I can plan other things in my life around that. To me the assignment that pushed me throughout this semester to do better was the BMI testing. At the beginning of the semester when we ranked ourselves on the BMI table I was not happy with where I was at and it kind of made me discouraged, then I realized the only way to move to where I want to be is to put the work in and truly push myself. Once I reach my goal that I have made with my BMI level I hope to stay in the habits that I have created this semester to help me stay at that point throughout the rest of the future.
